2016 started off well for our Frankfort distribution terminal, achieving recognition in the Indiana Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) as a “Star” worksite.

The VPP recognizes Indiana employers that operate high quality safety and health management systems that maintain injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages. As one of only 75 businesses with this distinction, and one of four recertified within the last year, Frankfort serves as a model workplace for safety and health.

To qualify for this honor, our terminal had to prove that our policies can effectively identify, evaluate, prevent and control occupational hazards to prevent employee injury and illness. And the Frankfort terminal has gone above and beyond this standard. According to Frankfort superintendent John Martin, safety is the number one priority at the terminal. Procedures are evaluated at least once a year to ensure they are up-to-date and all new procedures undergo a JHA (an internal job hazard analysis) before they are put into place.

“Safety is our top priority,” said Martin. “It’s talked about on a daily basis. Our mindset is that we won’t do a job until we can do it safely.”

This attitude, combined with our safety procedures, is reflected in our safety record. Since Frankfort Terminal’s beginning, 46 years ago, we have not experienced a single lost-time or recordable injury, which much lower than the industry average rate of 3.3 incidents per 100 workers.

“These folks have proven how successful a culture of safety can be. The facility hasn’t had an IOSHA recordable injury in nearly 40 years because management and employees have committed to their goals of safety and health standards. Congratulations to everyone at CF Industries, Inc., and the IDOL looks forward to continuing to work with you.”

As a small facility with 4 full-time and 6 part-time employees, our terminal truly realizes the importance of workplace safety and environmental health. Our health and safety policies are implemented to protect our employees and our communities. We look forward to continuing to be a leader in workplace standards.
